Sun and Solar Symbols

Old Sol plays a big part in folk and peasant art throughout history. Is it any wonder since without our sun the Earth would be as cold and lifeless as the moon. The Sun is perfectly round main sequence star, a yellow dwarf star. It is made up mostly of hydrogen, a light gas and helium a heavier gas, that produces nuclear fusion. Nuclear fusion happens when two lighter atomic nuclei combine or 'fuse' together to produce an atomic nucleus.

Size of the Sun

Our sun is not the biggest star, but it is larger than most known suns in the universe. The diameter of the sun is about 1.4 million kilometers or 870,000 miles through the middle. It is so large that one million of our Earths could fit inside the sun.


It takes eight minutes for light to reach the planet Earth from the Sun. The Earth is about 150 million kilometers (km) or 93,000,000 miles away from the sun. Light travels at 300,000 km per second (186,411 miles per second)

The Sun is 4.5 billion years old and entering middle age. Old Sol has burned off around half of its hydrogen stores, but has enough energy left to continue burning for another 5 billion years.
